Dr. Weidong Mao is an accomplished strategy, technology, and innovation leader in media and telecommunication industry, He has decades of experience in architecture, engineering, and productization for broad technology areas such as Video, Streaming, Cloud, Networking, and AI. He is a prolific inventor with 75+ granted patents and is an IEEE Fellow for his contributions to video on demand and cloud computing. He is also a successful entrepreneur as co-founder of a startup that was later acquired. He continues to be actively involved with venture capital firms and startup companies as mentor, advisor, and investor.
He is currently a Senior Fellow in Technology, Product, and Experience (TPX) group at Comcast. He is a recognized industry expert and technology leader in digital media. He has led and contributed to various technology initiatives in Video on Demand, IP video, Cloud DVR, and Content Delivery Network. He currently leads Strategic Architecture and Technology group reporting directly to Comcast CTO, driving Comcast technology strategy in entertainment, connectivity, software, AI, data, and security.
Prior joining Comcast, he co-founded as CTO an interactive TV software startup MoreCom that was acquired by Liberate Technologies, a spin-off from Oracle. Previously, he served as Director of Telecommunication Unit of Motorola and developed interactive media technology and product via broadband networks. Previously, he was a Senior Member of Research Staff at Philips Labs and conducted R&D on video compression standard and technology.
He received Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Princeton University, and B.S. in electrical engineering from Peking University. He enjoys traveling, hiking, running, and golf.
